Learning new things.

Today, I learned that while I can walk almost two miles and then walk/run a little over two miles on the same day while wearing my Vibrams, what I can't do is wear Converse while carrying a heavy backpack to go visit my parents and then walk around all day the next day also wearing Converse. My foot is bothering me more today than it has since the day I injured it.

Yesterday, I traveled on the train to visit my parents, walked the short distance to the bus station, and then walked the short distance to their house, all while carrying a heavy backpack. My foot was bothering me a little last night, but it subsided so I didn't worry about it.

I decided this morning that I wasn't going to wear my Vibrams today, because I didn't feel like drawing attention to myself. I figured that if I loosely laced my Converse in the toe box, I would be fine. I spent the day at Special Olympics Rhode Island to watch my brother compete, so I spent a fair portion of the day walking around URI's campus. I also ran/walked from the Keaney parking lot to Browning hall at one point. Really not a strenuous day by any means... I didn't have my wildly inaccurate pedometer on me or anything but it really wasn't all that much walking. I did spend some time on my feet when I got home, cleaning with my mother, but again... not all that strenuous.

Sure enough, my foot has been really bothering me for the past few hours. I'm a little aggravated about it. I haven't had any active pain for weeks now, and I wear "real" shoes for two days and suddenly I'm in agony again? I suppose it's vaguely reassuring that I seem to be doing the right thing by wearing minimalist shoes, but still aggravating (no pun intended).

  1. Hi there! I came across your blog in my extensive Googling for "accessory navicular syndrome", "Vibrams", "minimalist shoes", etc, etc. I'm glad I found you! I have always had the funny accessory sticking out of my foot but just a few days ago (in a drastic attempt to be less of a couch potato and become a runner again), I rolled my ankle on a trail and now it's jutting out even more. Because I am rather cheap and impatient, I didn't want to try orthotics (maybe I shouldn't admit that) but after much researching and reading, I picked up a pair of KSO Treks (needed the Treks to get my feet accustomed to the very rocky trail I go on). Wore them for the first time today - awesome. Ran one mile and walked/jogged 1.5. My calves are sore. I suspect I'll regret it tomorrow. I tried to be patient and ease myself into it but I was so excited. However, no pain in my foot!! So awesome. Anyhoots, enough about me as this is just a comment box, not a "tell me about yourself" space LOL. Great blog, love your updates - thanks for documenting your progress! I'm following what's going on so keep those updates coming! Cheers :)

  2. Thanks so much for commenting! I'm generally a pretty private person when it comes to the internet, but I decided to keep this blog public in the hopes that someone would somehow discover it and find it helpful. I also did pretty extensive Google searches before starting, and couldn't find anything helpful or instructive, so I decided to take matters into my own hands (hence the experiment). Enjoy your Treks, a good friend of mine just got a pair. Just try not to overdo it, there's an awful lot of stories floating around the internet of people who did too much too soon (myself included!). Vibrams are way more fun than they ought to be! Thanks for reading, I'm glad to know I've got someone out there actually interested :)
